How to Ask for Someone’s Pronouns

Two people are walking by, one person is wearing the trans flag as a cape.

Hi, I’m Noor, and I go by she/her pronouns. What is your name and pronouns?

Instead of making assumptions about whether someone goes by “he” or “she” pronouns, let’s ask when meeting someone new. How do you ask for someone’s pronouns? Share your pronouns first and ask if they’d like to share. If not, never force someone to share if they’re not comfortable.

Note that “cis” stands for “cisgender” which describes a person who gender identity matches their sex assigned at birth. “Trans” or “transgender” describes a person whose gender identity or gender expression differs from the sex that they were assigned at birth.
