WE DAY 2016

If you follow the Kids Up Front blogs that we post, you will know that we love to write about the unique experiences that our kids get to have, and that are all made possible through the generosity of tens of thousands of donors!  One such unique event, and a signature event within the city, is the annual We Day celebration held at the Scotiabank Saddledome.  As we sat to write a blog about this special experience, we thought it important to remind ourselves of the purpose and mission of We Day; it is not simply a bunch of teenagers enjoying the performances of their favorite artists, or hearing inspiring messages from local celebrities while doing the “We Day Dance”!

What is We Day?

Kids Up Front was fortunate to be able to send 18 aspiring youth leaders to We Day on October 26, 2016.  We thought it would be impactful to have some of the youth write about their experience at We Day and then showcase this on our blog.  So, two of the youth that attended wrote the following about We Day and the impact that it had on them.  Thank you, Telus and We Day for the incredible morning!

“Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
-Martin Luther King, Jr.

“We day was an amazing experience, as a teen leader it was great being regarded for the hard work we have done and it inspired us to reach new heights and out do ourselves. Although it couldn’t have happened without you and I really want to thank you for the opportunity. It’s really hard to leave We Day the same person. Each speaker has something important to say, something that we can all apply to our everyday lives.

Each person takes something different from We Day, my take away is make sure your work is meaningful, I also learned this in the Dominican Republic with Me to We. Our leader had told us about how people on another service trip had build wells, but they were riddled with problems so they were meaningless. When I volunteer I think about how my I’m contributing, will my work impact somebody else?

We Day impacts youth by giving them a goal to work for, they help give us the ability to work for solutions to social issue. They allow everyone to get involved at the local level and global level. We are given equal opportunity to earn our ticket to We Day, and our input determines the output.”

“Attending We Day was a wonderful opportunity to gain insight on some of the leadership skills and initiatives it takes to create positive change, along with providing many inspiring stories of individuals whose choice to do so resulted in grand scale effect. As a youth who is at the critical time for creating my personal path, I found We Day provided so much positive influence to take myself in a direction where I can benefit other individuals with my actions. The speakers emphasized the fact that any change, big or small, still amounted to a better place for all of us. I felt that the unity between all the people at the event was truly inspiring and motivational, in and out of itself. Thank you very much for providing this experience for the Teen Leadership Program.”
